Thoughts on Being Outside of Time

Some thoughts on time, Union Square New York 1938, David Tuttle, FourthWayToday.org, Robert Earl Burton, Fellowship of Friends

Walt Whitman:

To think that the sun rose in the east—that men and women were  flexible, real, alive—that every thing was alive,
To think that you and I did not see, feel, think, nor bear our part,
To think that we are now here and bear our part.
To think how eager we are in building our houses,
To think others shall be just as eager, and we quite indifferent.

The ceaseless movement of our many ‘I’s mark the passage of time. Sometimes it passes quickly and sometimes slowly. It does not seem to have a constant tempo. Higher states of consciousness are timeless. My teacher says, “The only way to stop time is to be present.”

Memories – Outside of Time

Some of our memories are outside time. A memory can show ourselves exactly as we were when the event occurred, with a photographic quality. From these experiences, we could say that time does not exist. Whereas our efforts are in time, with the purpose to arrive at the timeless present. We who are in this work use time to create moments of presence. This is the grand proposition of the universe – to create new consciousness along the line of time. Motion implies time, the Absolute is considered the Immovable.

Meister Eckhart: God is God in that he is Immovable. Creatures are all of them moveable and restless, therefore I cannot rest, except in God.

The end of a day for man and the end of a breath for Nature

Time is Breath

“Time is breath.”, says Gurdjieff. Theoretically, all cosmoses have the same number of breaths, the same length of lifetime. A man’s entire life occurs in a blink of the eye of the sun. For Nature, it passes in the time of one day. Nature breathes in and out in one day and one night of man’s time.
