Beyond the Fourth Way – Embracing the Mystery

Embracing the mystery, higher forces, C influence, Robert Earl Burton, Fellowship of Friends

When practicing this scientific methodology began, I was happy to escape the too-often overbearing and naive beliefs about the universe and angels. Now, I am a believer.

Robert Burton: “Angels are in our life, making us like them.”

I started as a Fourth Way practitioner when I became serious about working on myself. This ancient and scientific system of awakening was rediscovered by George Gurdjieff and made famous by the writings of Peter Ouspensky. I became a student of these ideas, understanding over the years the simple yet revealing truth about human beings. I discovered the basic facts of human life and tried to increase my awareness by following the ideas of the system. The books and my experiences revealed that people are asleep but can awaken using techniques like dividing attention, not expressing negative emotions, and abstaining from daydreaming.

When first practicing this scientific methodology, I was happy to escape the too-often overbearing and naive beliefs about the Universe and Angels. These were ethereal emotions – in my belief – that nobody understood. It seemed more like a welcomed excuse for any real inner work by proclaiming to receive bliss without any specific efforts and aims.

My understanding of higher forces, angels, God, or however you like to name the unknown has evolved.

We seekers often fall short of establishing something higher in our lives. We have learned to observe ourselves, and what we usually see is not pretty. And yet, this is a trap, a last defense of the ego, called ‘the lower self’, that wants us to focus on our faults rather than our merits.

The ego wants to keep us separate from the divine. It focuses on the illusion of separateness. When we let go of the ego, we realize our oneness with all that is. When we shift our attention to the present, we connect with our heart and soul and go beyond any intellectual understanding and disciplined practice.

Embracing the mystery. This is the power beyond our senses that makes miracles appear. By connecting with our higher being, we can experience greater peace, joy, and love. We can also create a more positive and peaceful world around us. Our illusion of separation within the ocean of cosmic consciousness is one of the most significant obstacles to enlightenment. Experiencing fear and insecurity along our spiritual path signifies losing our true nature.

When I decide to be present right now, a transformative power enters. The moment is the only place I can experience true peace and joy. When I am present, the connection to a higher power is made. As the chattering of my mind stops, I start listening to my soul. When I give up my longing, stillness appears. Only when I have appeared is an angel in the room – my higher self. Then, I understand I am a spiritual being experiencing a human existence.

Poets who use their work to reach the higher gave us beautiful images and grand perceptions of angels and higher beings in their emotional states of spiritual consciousness. When we connect with our soul, natural creativity arises, expressing itself through poetry, music, or other art forms. These works are not simply products of the mind but emanations of a more profound truth.

When I am present, poetry quells out of my heart, and my soul hums love songs. At that moment, I understand that what appeared is not made on this earth. What has manifested might never die and roam the earth to help other evolving souls. I do not know. Overthinking about it takes away from the effort to appear.

I invite you to start embracing the mystery and wonder inherent in the spiritual path. Instead, go beyond technique and theory and cultivate a deep connection with your higher self through presence, openness, and artistic expression. When you reach beyond the visible world, the unseen world appears.

“For everything that lives is holy life; And in the faces of men and animals, we see the image of the One who is all in all.” William Blake
