Quotations on the Subject of Being

Alaskan island, quotations on being, the line of being

We supply some chosen quotations on the line of being. To develop greater being, we must ‘be.’

Being is the accumulated effect of efforts to awaken, the ability to be the words, i.e., to put theories of the system into practice, not just to know them.  –  Robert Burton

Development of being means awakening, since the chief feature of our being is that we are asleep. By trying to be awake we change our being; this is the first point. – Ouspensky

Right development of being is impossible without schools. – Ouspensky

Level of being depends on growth of essence. – Ouspensky

There can be only one aim: to change our being, for if we want to change something in our own understanding off the world, we must change something in ourselves. – Ouspensky

Simplicity, patience, compassion. These three are your greatest treasures. Simple in actions and thoughts, you return to the source of being. – Lao Tse

Only in being lived by the Tao can you be truly yourself. – Lao Tse

Human development follows two lines, the line of knowledge and the line of being. With proper evolution, the lines of knowledge and being develop simultaneously, parallel to each other, helping each other. But if the line of knowledge goes too far ahead of the line of being or the line of being goes ahead of the lines of knowledge, human development will go down the wrong path and will sooner or later stop.
People understand what “knowledge” means. They understand also the possibility of different levels of knowledge, they understand that knowledge can be greater or less. However, they do not understand that being, or existence, can also have different levels or categories. Take, for example, the existence of a mineral and a plant – these are different levels of being. The existence of an animal is different from the existence of a human. But the existence of two people can differ more from each other than that of a mineral and that of an animal.
If knowledge goes far ahead of existence, it becomes theoretical, abstract and inapplicable to life, and in fact harmful. Instead of serving life and helping people successfully fight the difficulties they encounter, it complicates a person’s life. …Knowledge that is not in line with being cannot be sufficiently complete and meet the real needs of a person. It always remains knowledge of only one thing, ignoring the other thing, knowledge of details without knowledge of the whole, knowledge of form without knowledge of essence. – Ouspensky

Of that heaven beyond the heavens, no earthly poet has yet sung, nor shall sing worthily. It is there that true being dwells. – Plato
